Treatment Approach
Chiropractic:
Primarily spinal adjustments with quick, thrust-based manipulations
Osteopathy:
Whole-body approach using gentle stretching, soft tissue work, and mobilisation
Focus Area
Chiropractic:
Mainly spine and nervous system
Osteopathy:
Entire musculoskeletal system – how your whole body moves together
Appointment Length
Chiropractic:
Often 10-20 minutes
Osteopathy:
30-45 minutes – time to properly assess and treat
Treatment Style
Chiropractic:
May involve frequent 'cracking' adjustments
Osteopathy:
Varied techniques – many without any clicking
Both chiropractors and osteopaths are regulated healthcare professionals. The choice often comes down to which approach suits you better.

Common questions about chiropractic vs osteopathy
What is the difference between a Chiropactor and an Osteopath?
Chiropractors believe that spine alignment affects the nervous system and thus health and healing, while osteopaths take a more holistic, whole-body approach. Our view is that the body is an interconnected system in which imbalances in one area affect overall health.
Can an osteopath help with the same problems a chiropractor treats?
Yes absolutely. Osteopaths are sometimes known as 'human engineers' and work on the entire body, including the spine.
Is osteopathy gentler than chiropractic?
Generally, yes. While both professions can use manipulation, osteopaths tend to use a broader range of techniques, including gentle stretching, soft tissue massage, and rhythmic movements. We tailor our approach to each patient – some people need firmer treatment, others respond better to very gentle techniques.
Do I need to keep coming back regularly, like with a chiropractor?
Our goal is to help you get better and stay better, not to create ongoing dependency. Most patients see us for a short course of treatment (typically 3-6 sessions) until their problem resolves. We'll give you exercises and advice to maintain your improvement. Some patients do choose occasional 'tune-up' sessions, but this is entirely optional.
Are osteopaths properly qualified?
Yes, osteopaths complete a 4-5 year degree course and are regulated by law under the Osteopaths Act 1993. We're registered with the General Osteopathic Council (GOsC), and it's actually illegal to call yourself an osteopath without being registered. This provides the same level of protection as other healthcare professions.
Will I hear cracking sounds during treatment?
Maybe, maybe not. Joint manipulation can produce a 'click' or 'pop' sound, but this isn't essential for effective treatment. Many of our techniques don't involve any clicking at all. If you prefer treatment without joint clicking, just let us know – we have plenty of other effective approaches.
How many sessions will I need?
This varies depending on your problem and how long you've had it. For recent issues, 2-4 sessions may be enough. Longer-standing problems typically need 4-6 sessions. We'll give you an honest estimate after your first appointment and won't recommend more treatment than you need.
Do you treat sciatica?
Yes, sciatica is one of the most common problems we treat. We'll assess what's causing your sciatic pain – whether it's a disc issue, muscle tension, or joint problem – and tailor treatment accordingly. Many patients find significant relief within a few sessions.
Ready to Try a Gentler Approach?
Whether you were looking for a chiropractor or are just exploring your options, we'd love to help. Book an appointment and experience the difference a longer, whole-body approach can make.
